Since 2007 Family Taboo have refused to let ability, tunefulness or the continuous presence of Ed Gein-alikes get in the way of what has begun.

Family Taboo has run its course
Dear friends,
In the upcoming months Family Taboo will cease operations as a project and I will no longer be recording under that name. There are a variety of reasons for this, some personal, mostly practical. What I can assert is that no Ed Gein-alikes were involved in the decision. There were initially two final EPs in the ‘electronic recordings’ series scheduled for the end of 2011 and 2012 - they will now be combined into one release and will feature along with the previous EPs (Surge and Transport Films) on a compilation set for release in early 2012 which will serve as the final FT album. Previous releases 'Demons Reactivated' and 'Yardfire' will be back in print for a limited time also. More details will follow through the usual sources.
There will definitely be new music from me in the very near future, under a different name, with what I hope will be some new modes of expression for me. I’m very excited about this.
Aloha and mwuaah,
AD.

Family Taboo II: Transport Films
II: Transport Films
Following on from the release of Surge, EP #1 in a four-part series of material recorded during the summer of 2010, comes Transport Films. This was by far the most difficult set of pieces to cohere, as the tone is considerably darker than the rest of the recordings, some of the songs contain only bare elements from the initial tracks and a lot of re-recording was necessary (but invigorating) - best to think of this EP as the dark middle act before the upbeat finale, which I suppose will make EP #4 the extraneous fourth act (although that is manifestly not the case). I can promise that EP #3 will be a poptastic thing, in fact it will be stupid-fresh in many respects.
01 Retreat Ahead
The title comes from Roland Barthes, the quote is: "There is only one way left to escape the alienation of present-day society: to retreat ahead of it." Until about two years ago I don’t think I even once articulated a single sensible thing in my life, and it’s not like I have a high strike rate now either. I’m inclined to feel quite alienated by any nostalgia for shit things, particularly the 1990s, but that’s only because I regret pretty much all of my behaviour during that decade, but I don’t regret any of the people, not even the ones who I would have considered transgressors, and any good times I had only happened because of the close friends I was lucky enough to have. I was thinking a lot of about an old friend and former teacher when it came to putting this together, someone who used to refer a lot to Barthes’ Image Music Text. He is no longer with us now but I think he would have been amused by the purloining of a Barthes quote and its application to the queasy tension described by the music. The words are for him. There are two versions of this track, the first one was too bouncy.

02 Halogen Sun
Morning time. Originally the first part of my currently abandoned Springworm Suite, this was initially recorded using acoustic instruments but never finished. I’m hoping to revisit other parts of the project in the future, hopefully in a live scenario .

03 Ingolsby
The Family Taboo debut of the Korg Monotron. A simultaneously turbulent and joyful piece, it reflects the mood of this set of songs and points the way to the tone of the next release.

04 Antechamber
A companion of sorts to Retreat Ahead, it might work best if you have to drive somewhere at night in a frantic effort to reach/escape someone.

05 Run With The Hare, Hunt With The Hounds
One of the sporadic instances of a FT number that you can dance to, this is meant as escapism and enjoyment, ripe actually for a 12” remix.

Retreat Ahead
Retreat Ahead
Don't record those figures
when you try to blink
Don't record those shadows
when you go to sleep
Walk instead down to the bridge
where the ruins of the buildings
grind their teeth
against the sky
And it's swarming through the very air
A wound that simply won't close up
Shopworn and injurious
Thinning out the neighbourhood

Malachy Shavas: Dream Diary

The first in an occassional series of transcriptions from the diary of former mob doctor and internet sensation/disgrace Malachy Shavas. This week Shavas awakens shuddering from a dream involving the detestable James Corden and the apparently innocent ghost of Gerry Rafferty.
"...God Gerry Rarrerty scorching to be seen. A herald in the native of transport, then evangelising, a chorus to the limits of the genre. After a gerry rabberty drank of Jams C0ordin I asked her for the code equalization of her boobs from elastic to the sides. I wiped it to coexist with my bering and neighboring my blame ballroom. Jammmmes Cardin sucked alternative - it was a mouth.
I should nation arched to handset for the antarctica - abstractly I was petrified with fear. God gerry rarity scorching be seen. Let's likewise whisper these keys 1 to 8 optimism with c. Although the g3rry raff3rty is an innocent operator in this mode, the foam melancholy (and cd text/dashboard displays in sought applications) bars boxer id3 empowerment of the slow Corden, Jam3s song. Jerry Rapherty. James Courden. Jams. Gerry.
I stood up resonating her panties and hatching my pants. Still, tired of talking cello drawbacks as well. I stirred triumphantly her hardy her sneak her scouring flash the disney cock. I knelt in a dangerous age and multiplex my teeth. Laura's octet were reliant on her convertible girl's eighty bottom. Control programs: is illegal nightcap.
Thank you, mrs. chaffey."

Family Taboo I: Surge
In the summer of 2010 I packed my guitars away and set about writing and recording with two synthesisers, a drum machine, a microphone and a variety of metal containers and glass. The sessions ran from May to August yielding a number of pieces ranging in style and tone, unabashedly influenced by the likes of Krzysztof Penderecki, Nurse With Wound, Wolf Eyes, Broadcast, early Human League, some artists from the DFA roster, Marc Willkinson's score for Blood On Satan's Claw, and Kid A-era Radiohead.
These recordings have been split into several EPs and will be released as digital downloads over the coming 12 months, eventually to be issued together on one collection which will include collaborations, and other material not featured on the initial downloads.
The first release of this intended series is Surge, a 3 track EP available for download from 01/02/2011. Details are as follows:
Family Taboo - I: Surge
01 Green Laser
A gateway track: metallic, serrated synth fun meets lo-fi confection, potentially useful in luring ‘friends’ who suspect they’re being spammed and/or think I’m a wretched deviant when I suggest in online scenarios that they ’like’ Family Taboo, a name which is google-search kryptonite.

02 New Ruins
A little bit more in line with my usual predilections. A multi-movement piece, with each section becoming more alienated from its predecessor. Ritualistic in tone and inspired in part by my hometown’s first shopping center, multi-storey car park, frequently empty retail units and the galvanising effect on its people of finally having the town’s inaugural escalator, all circa 2006.

03 Little Black Heart
Family Taboo’s contribution to the idea of a fizzy summer pop song. I’ll do one of these again in the future only next time I’ll wipe the smirk off my face.
